ENHANCING NATURE

Biofabrication creates new functional properties with biological building blocks. At Modern Meadow, we invented something remarkable that we’ve embedded into our ZOA materials: Bio-alloys.

Mechanical data shows that combining our select proteins with bio-based polymers at the molecular level in ZOA provides distinctive durability and resistance properties that differ from the individual components alone. We call this unique material combination a bio-alloy. An alloy is a combination of two or more elements, which generates distinct mechanical properties from those of its individual constituents.

Whereas other bio-based materials on the market utilize biocontent as a filler, in ZOA the proteins perform as a functional component and enable us to tune the material’s performance.

A SUSTAINABLE EXPRESSION OF COLOR

Did you know that up to 200,000 tons of dye chemicals are lost to effluents every year due to inefficiencies in textile dyeing and finishing operations? Many textiles and leathers today are thrown into vats of color, and the resulting wastewater from these processes are classified as the most polluting of all the industrial sectors.

At Modern Meadow, we build our materials from the proteins up and we use an extraordinary process to express color. We dye our materials in the liquid state in which the dyes chemically bind to the proteins we have selected & tuned in ZOA. This allows us to use only the precise amount of dye we need, which eliminates any dye runoff from material manufacturing and finishing.

Because the dye molecules are firmly “anchored” to the proteins in ZOA, our materials have great colorfastness. Unlike many leathers and synthetics that have a layer of color coating on top, the color in ZOA is permeated across the entire thickness of our material, creating unique color depth and enriched color expression.

Using our understanding of how structure can dictate function and performance, we design bio-engineered proteins that have unique structural and functional properties with proprietary yeast strains. We engineer cells at the DNA level to create recombinant microorganisms that can produce these proteins. With protein design capabilities, Modern Meadow develops tailored materials and ingredients to create differentiated products across multiple industries.

MAKING BESPOKE PROTEINS SCALABLE & ACCESSIBLE

At Modern Meadow, we use fermentation technology to produce animal-free proteins via a scale-able process. Like brewing beer or making wine, we grow and multiply our designed yeast cells into billions of cell factories that produce target bespoke proteins. These proteins become the fundamental building blocks for materials and ingredients that can be used across multiple industries.
