At Modern Meadow, dye directly binds to the protein in a liquid state when we form the Bio-Alloy™ layer of our materials. This allows us to use only the precise amount of dye needed and eliminate any dye runoff from material manufacturing and finishing.
Unlike other materials that have a layer of color on top of their coating, our Bio-Alloy™ is colored in its entirety, inside and out, creating unique color depth and enriched color expression with less dye input. Since our color is firmly “anchored” to proteins in the Bio-Alloy™, the rich color expression is long-lasting and durable, with dramatically improved crocking performance.
Our Bio-Alloy™ technology allows us to create abrasion-resistant, water-resistant, and durable materials with long-lasting performance. Their strength and resilience are like that of cartilaginous materials, and they age naturally and soften with oils similar to natural leather. The result is a material that is supple to the touch and versatile across countless applications.

Modern Meadow Biofabricated Materials began with an R&D initiative to develop a sustainable alternative to leather. This led to our breakthrough discovery of proteins as functional ingredients. In 2017, we launched our prototype brand ZOA. Our experiments and exploration within ZOA led to the creation of Bio-Alloy™ and its application in a wide range of high performing, low waste biofabricated materials.
