Following its world debut at the MoMA exhibition “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”, MoMA has acquired the Zoa™ graphic t-shirt, the first ever biofabricated product to become part of MoMA’s permanent collection.
Nutley, New Jersey, March 9th, 2018 — Modern Meadow, the biofabrication company pioneering Zoa™ bioleather materials, today announced that the t-shirt it first unveiled at The Museum of Modern Art in October of 2017 will be joining MoMA’s permanent collection as its first biofabricated acquisition.
Commissioned by Paola Antonelli, MoMA’s Senior Curator of the Department of Architecture & Design, Modern Meadow was given the challenge to reimagine the graphic t-shirt, often a symbol of revolution. The item allowed Modern Meadow to break today’s expectations of leather and showcase new design possibilities on an unexpected product. The t-shirt is made from a variety of fabrics that have been bound together with a liquid form of Zoa bioleather, no stitches necessary; the seams are the material itself.
“The idea behind the Zoa™ t-shirt was to spark conversations – to encourage people to re-imagine what you can design and make if leather can come in a liquid form?” said Suzanne Lee, Chief Creative Officer of Modern Meadow. “We wanted to show that Zoa opens up a world of exciting material possibilities. We’re thrilled that the MoMA has recognized the potential of our technology and the full biofabrication movement to change the world we live in today.”
The Zoa™ bioleather t-shirt will be the first biofabricated item MoMA has acquired in its history.
